There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling… – Jack Kerouac

Have you ever thought of studying abroad? It may be far easier than you think!

At Eastern Michigan, 2-300 student every year trek off to continue their education in a unique way in all corners of the globe. While many of us might think that study abroad is too expensive, or we need have the foreign language skills of a UN interpreter or that we will have to bid adieu to home for months: that simply isn’t the case. EMU’s study abroad program prides itself on its diversity. The range of programs is quite large. There are some programs that pack in a whole 3 credit hours of study in one jam packed week! There are the traditional semester or year aboard programs that can offer the chance to live cheaply in another part of the world you never thought possible. No matter what you choose the programs are designed to work well for students.

For example: they are faculty deigned, and faculty led trips. You won’t be sent off not knowing what to expect. You won’t waste the entire week trying to find your bearings and communicate using hand signals. These programs are designed to allow an unforgettable learning experience, utterly different from anything available at home in Ypsilanti. Many of the trips are designed in such a way that they can fit in with your normal schedule. You certainly won’t be left behind if you choose to study abroad, in fact, you could even wind up ahead. The week long trips frequently take place during spring break or the week between winter and summer term classes, so you won’t miss out on exams back in the states.

Along with different lengths and program intensities, there is also a wide variety in destinations and topics. Perhaps you are interested in management or International Business. Where better to learn than one of the largest market places in the world; China? The Tiajin University of Commerce hosts marketing classes while still allowing for time to visit some of the most famous sites on the globe, like the Great Wall and Forbidden City. You could also study at Oxford University in England, easily one of the most distinguished institutions of higher learning in the world. This program lasts for either 6 weeks in any major or even an entire semester. The possibilities are endless.

Now this may sound too good to be true, but ti really isn’t. While cost can be a factor, it shouldn’t be the deciding factor when it comes to study abroad. It is all about an experience you wouldn’t be able to buy anywhere else. Plus, it really isn’t as expensive as you might think. With the established semester and year programs, EMU partners with international universities to simply exchange students, so your tuition won’t go up. Along with a relatively small resource fee, the biggest challenge will be reaching your destination. But don’t fret too much! The university has actually made it easier by leaving travel to and from up to you. Many students found it far easier to get the cheapest deals on their preferred airline and use frequent flier miles this way. And booked far enough in advance, international flight may not be as expensive as you think. This is not a case we recommend you to buy your tickets the week before.

The benefits to studying abroad are numerous. By gaining a new perspective on the world and leaving your typical comfort zone, you can learn as much about yourself as you can any subject on one of these trips. In another country and culture, every single interaction you have will be a great opportunity for learning and introspection.

If you think you might be ready, application couldn’t be easier, as it is all online. Just head on over to http://www.emich.edu/abroad/ and find out more.

So if you are ready to experience the adventure of a lifetime, head out and find it.
