National College Health Assessment & The Wellness Center

Have you used some of the services provided by the Wellness Center? You have probably benefited, even if you have never heard of them. Located on the first floor of the Snow Health Center, they work in conjunction with CAPS to provide complete health and wellness services for students here on campus. For example, they are the ones responsible for facilitating the cool new student origination Health Speak.
They are also in charge of wellness programs on campus. These run the gambit for the classic Wellness Woof Wednesdays to educational alcohol and other drug programs for students. Woof Wednesdays involve pairing together the Wellness Center and  Therapaws of Michigan to make interaction with therapy dogs a regular occurrence at EMU. WWW is every 3rd Wednesday. Research indicates that interaction with therapy dogs can temporarily affect the release of various neurotransmitters in the brain; levels of oxytocin (linked with bonding) and dopamine (involved in the reward-motivation system) are increased, while cortisol levels (an immunosuppressant associated with stress) are decreased.
They also facilitate the CloseUp Theatre Troupe that preforms plays and vignettes about social justice issues for different groups all over campus. Its a great way to take in an entertaining production while learning about some of the most important issues on the national stage today.
One of the biggest things the Wellness Center has coming up isthe National College health Assessment Survey, This survey is they we gather health and wellness information on EMU students. Why is this important? It helps the school to develop programming related to the needs of our students. For example, last time students took this survey in 2014 we learned that two of the biggest barriers to academic success for EMU students are anxiety and depression. We then used this data to apply and receive grant funding to support areas such as suicide prevention. So this survey is very important.
How do you take the survey? The survey is sent to a selection of random students all across campus. If you are lucky enough to be randomly selected, there is definitely an incentive to fill it out and get it back in ASAP. The anonymous survey will qualify you for LBC credit! How cool is that? Help out the college with just a few minutes of your time and get credit for you. So keep your eye on your inbox.
