At this past week’s Equity Within the Classroom state-wide conference for secondary and higher education professionals hosted by Oakland University, a team of EMU’s Holman Success Center staff and graduate students presented a session highlighting EMU’s EDGE program. After learning about many of the program’s components (from pre-campus outreach, to EDGE orientation, to the UNIV101L3 course, as well as the various other support programs HSC has to offer), educators from other Michigan colleges made such comments as “this presentation should be copyrighted,” “great program,” and “such great innovation.” Audience members were particularly interested in how to start a similar program on their own campuses.
In response to Eastern Michigan University’s commitment to student engagement and success, under the direction of Christine Deacons, the Holman Success Center has successfully worked with various departments and administrators across campus and has received funding from the State of Michigan’s KCP initiative, along with other grants and donations, in order to support the diverse student population.
The EMU EDGE program provides students with free academic workshops, training in study skills, academic monitoring, individualized instruction, and advising assistance. EDGE students receive one-on-one assistance from our trained success coaches who help students gain the skills they need to reach their personal and academic goals.
Other programs that the Holman Success Center offers include free tutoring, supplemental instruction, and success coaching. There is also an incentive program called “My Eagle Rewards” which allows students to earn prizes, and possibly free tuition, just for getting involved and utilizing campus resources while maintaining good academic standing. It would be misleading to say that these types of programs are not offered at other universities, but the cohesiveness of the faculty and graduate staff working together is what really makes this program so successful and unique. The Holman Success Center is designed to help students in all walks of life, and all one needs to do is walk in their doors to meet our friendly staff and schedule a meeting with a success coach, or possibly just come in on a Wednesday for some free cookies.
