Tayari Jones’s novel An American Marriage follows the relationship between Roy and Celestial Hamilton. The themes in the novel, race, socioeconomic status, and the criminal justice system, are understood through a love story. This novel is important. It tells a story that is truly American and yet largely ignored. Jones empathetically breaks down our collective ideas about The American Dream and replaces it with a sad reality.
This novel is heartbreaking and beautiful. Jones does an incredible job of writing about a particular experience, that of the characters in the story, while offering social commentary. It is difficult to create such rich characters and plot lines in addition to considering cultural issues in such a deep way. An American Marriage is a well-balance and poetic story of love, loss, and modern American stories.
